Meet Eva, owner of The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie
Finding her own way to define the spirit of coffee: Spotlight on a trailblazer.
Eva never dreamed of selling coffee, just enjoying it. She stepped upon a winding path as a child learning from the flowers, weeds, trees, and herbs in her neighborhood and from the wild places that she loves.
Eventually she would become the owner of Minglement, a specialty food market full of organic and artisanal foods, local produce, herbal remedies and more – est. 1972.
If you’ve whiled away some hours on the front porch of The Roasterie or popped upstairs to Minglement to purchase from the extensive bulk herbs & spices and learn of some herb lore, chances are you’ve had an encounter with Eva, owner-ess of The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie and The Minglement Herbal Apotheca.
Both businesses are located in the historic SBC (Seattle’s Best Coffee) roasting facility. The charming building, well over 100+ years old is located where the town of Vashon originated. Its well-worn wooden floors, charming front porch, dramatic high ceilings, make for a cozy place to be.
A Native of Seattle and with an entrepreneurial spirit, Eva learned from the grounds up about the ways of coffee. She defines her own style and way to interpret the unique flavors and spirit of her rare coffee beans. She is dedicated to ensuring that this Historic coffee facility and its vintage roasting equipment is maintained – while keeping Jim Stewart ‘s (founder of Seattles Best Coffee) original rustic Northern European style of roasting using rare high mountain directly traded beans.
The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is a family business – brought forth with the help of her husband Ken, three sons and a daughter, as well as a dedicated staff supporting her efforts today.
Eva and Ken live on Vashon on their organic farm, Breathing Meadows, where they grow heirloom organic vegetables, medicinal & culinary herbs, and berries.
what’s in eva’s cup: For a quiet moment of indulgence, eva loves the Bernardo, but most often you can find her enjoying a cup of her favored Midnight Blend at the Roasterie. Away from The Roasterie, she can be found with Ken and their beloved dog (Grey Feather) standing in awe of nature’s gifts – among the trees, herbs and flowers.
